The Search

We began our search in the summer of 1999 for a small vintage Airstream. We looked at quite a few before coming across what we felt was the ideal combination of price, features and condition. “Myrtle” (as in turtle) was discovered via the airstream.net classifieds. The image to right is what launched our journey from California to Indianapolis in October. We found waiting there a second owner Airstream (Jackson Center) in relatively good original condition. We agreed to the asking price right there.

The Acquisition

Based on the e-mail description and photos we hopped on a plane to Indiana and bought “Myrtle” right there – getting her home was another matter. Lacking enough vacation days to tow her the 1200 miles, we searched and found a car hauler to bring her west with a load of other autos. A towing outfit was ruled out due to poor tires, unknown mechanical condition and the November Rocky Mountain and Sierra snowfalls.

The Caravel loaded and ready to begin its 1200 mile journey
