In one of Airstreams first attempts
to limit the customization of its models, the Ohio factory experimented
with the idea
of adding the suffix "C" to base models to identify them as
Custom. In this case this is really just a slightly modified
Flying Cloud layout, the only real difference being a bath across
the back and full height wardrobe drawers from a Caravanner. This practice
only seemed to exist from 1956 through 1958.
|
To show just how crazy 1956 was
- the below Ohio Custom trailer is really just a 1956 Caravanner with
a 1956 Flying Cloud Serial #. Who knows
what Airstream Ohio was thinking...
|
This is O -3402 - half Flying
Cloud, half Caravanner. I love the layout and the condition of
this trailer.

Princess stove

Original Refer, with the cooling
air intake at the bottom. By the 1960's,
refer intake air was obtained from outside the trailer through vents
|
In a Caravanner and Safari
type layout, the galley in this Custom is open and under a streetside
bank of windows. The cupboard doors match the light fixtures
|
|
L shaped twin beds - rather a
nice design. You get to be close
to your lovely spouse, yet don't wake each other up when getting
out of bed during the night or in the morning.
|
All in one bathroom, or wet bath. Toilet,
sink & shower.
|
|
Shower drain - a the shower curtain
closes across the door.
|
A small nightstand by the back twin
|
A Carlson heater in the floor
- not one of Airstream's better ideas. They
work great, but are hot to step on.
|
Curtain closes across the aisle
to sorta close off the beds - requires a special little closes-out
panel.
