The “Before Tour” – Interior

Restoration of our 1957 Flying Cloud
– Continued –

The front dinette is not original and is poorly made. The original floor plan had a sofa. The galvanized water tank hides under the wooden box in the front. Brown shag carpet from the 1970’s cover the sheet Linoleum floor.

The plan is to build a new dinette modeled after the Airstream design of the era, using the same materials and construction methods employed then. The cushions from the 1970’s are hard and crunchy.

The galley is complete, but in very rough condition. The floor is rotted out under the birch cabinets. Water was provided by the pump action faucet (not shown), as there is no pressure pump. The Princess stove is white porcelain under the Rust colored paint.

Here you can see the contact paper installed over all the interior Coral colored doors. The Veritas gas light is original.

Looking aft from the galley to the back. The cross curtain is hung from a non-original piece of wood screwed onto the ceiling.

Looking forward, the ceiling details include the 12v light that connected to the tow vehicle battery. Also seen is the front shelf above the window and one of the 3 110v original valance lights.

The original Day & Night heater and Krefft gas/electric refrigerator. The Krefft too is painted a flat Rust paint, which may be original.

The inside of the door and door screen with the door levers and knobs.

The vents are pretty much all like this – missing many parts and broken. The Zolatone finish is great condition in some places, and poor condition in others. We’ll have to see how it goes as to if we have to repaint the entire interior.

The back sofa-bed. At night it folds down into a barely double bed.

Someone had modified the back sofa-bed onto a lay flat bed, also modifying the cabinets along the way. The remaining cabinets are heavily water-damaged.

The medicine chest and cabinet above the bed. The medicine chest is one of the few cabinets that will get to remain untouched.

The Coral Masonite hardboard shower walls. The hot water is supplied by an original 110v water heater under the galley cabinets. No gas hot water was installed.

The shower pan and the early ’60’s Hoover Constellation vacuum cleaner that came with the trailer. It still works great!

The bathroom is much smaller than it looks. The toilet is in OK condition, but the black water tank is rusted out. The original black/gray/coral folding door is on the left.

The plastic sink. Your legs would have to tuck under it to sit on the toilet. The door into the bathroom is only 14 inches wide.
